Supporting holistic ways to maintain health and elevate well-being is the foundation of our apothecary. That’s why we love sharing lifestyle shifts and wellness tactics that we’ve found to make a meaningful impact in our personal journey to health.
One important practice that has shifted not only the health of our mouth, but has supported immune, neurological and cardiovascular strength is oil pulling.
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that has traditionally been used for thousands of years to strengthen the immune system and the health of the teeth, gums, and jaw. In ancient Indian tradition, oil pulling is an irreplaceable preventative practice and respected remedy for decay, cavities, gingivitis, halitosis, bleeding gums and imbalances in the mouth and throat. Modern research has recently proven that the simple practice of swishing sesame or coconut oil in the mouth significantly reduces microbial burden and infection in ways that merely brushing or rinsing with mouthwash cannot. Oil pulling pulls the microorganisms from deep in the gums that cause gingivitis, and eliminates them, restoring the mouth’s terrain. Because our teeth and gums have an indirect connection to our organs, eliminating bacteria in the mouth systemically supports the health of our immune system, lymphatic system, cardiovascular system and our brain.
How do I practice oil pulling?
Oil pulling is simple: measure out 1/2 to 1 full tablespoon of either raw coconut or sesame oil, and swish it around your mouth for 20 minutes. In the beginning, 20 minutes may be too difficult. That’s okay! We all need to start somewhere, right? Oil pulling with coconut oil for just 7 minutes can significantly reduce levels of Candida and Strep in the mouth. So start slow, and work your way up.
How can essential oils help my oil practice?
For those of you well-versed in the art of oil pulling, this may be old news. But we have a tactic that often goes unacknowledged. You can increase the antimicrobial benefit of your oil pulling practice by adding essential oils!
We find that not only does it increase the potential to restore proper balance in the mouth, but it also helps make the process more tolerable. Add a few drops of essential oil blends “Watch Your Mouth” or “Just For Grins” to your tablespoon of coconut oil to experience the immune restorative benefits of co-swishing with Peppermint, Cassia or Clove. This packs a detoxifying punch; not only are you protecting your teeth, but you’re now directly supporting the health of your tonsils, sinuses, and thymus gland.
